With 3-4 days you can see in Iceland a lot! My next post will be about our sightseeng tours on Iceland: 3 amazing waterfalls, geysers, glecier, volcanoes, black beach, Reykjavik, twice nothern lights, etc)

You will be able to enjoy all this beauty if you are dressed accordingly.

The full list is at the end of this post.

Wind!

It was windy. Really windy. The warmest cloths will bring nothing as cold wind will surely get through it. Pack windproof and waterproof cloths (if you want to come closer to geysers and/or waterfalls).

Face /head

Sunglasses. Despite of the cold weather it was very sunny! I was so glad I packed mine last minute.
Hats look cute but not really functional. Make sure you pack the warmest one. Mine hat is from Decathlon and worked great.
Buff: protects from wind your face and neck. I use buff instead of bulky scarf (takes space, gets wet by coming closer to waterfalls)

The good thing: if you book daily tours, you will spend a lot of time inside the bus. The longest we were visiting some sightseeing point was 1,5hours.

Body: pack layers

If it gets super cold (like waiting nights for hours for Nothern Lights to show up), make sure you can put all your warm cloths on you.

1 💨 base layer: thermo cloths (keeps dry)
2 🔥 mid layer: fleece and/or sweater (keeps warm)
3 ☔ outer layer: windproof and waterproof cloths (protects)

Hands and Feet

touch screen gloves or fingerless gloves with cover. Its more likely you will want to take pictures or film the sights you pass. Your hands will freeze within seconds. Pack some hand warmers that last 24 hours.

Taking photos in winter on the phone. From pixabay.

wool socks. At least 2 pairs. Its essential. You will walk a lot and having frozen feet is no joy. Wool will optimize the temperature of your feet. Pls dont pack cotton.

winter hiking boots + pack spikes if you have them (in our hotel one could borrow them) as there were quite many icy places.

Iceland is an amazing country with beautiful landscape and well organized bus tours.  It can be pricey, but following the tips below might help you to save money on travelling in Iceland. We stayed in Reykjavik.

Ideas where and how to safe

Fly with a friend to share costs on hotels, extra luggage, share groceries.
Fly off-season: like march-may, less crowded, more tour and hotel options
Don't book last minute: Iceland is a popular destination, good tour packages and affordable accomodations in Iceland might be sold out.

💙 save on Flights
💙 save on Accomodation
💙 save on Tours
💙 save on Lagoon entrance
💙 save on Food
💙 Our expenses, all in

Save on Flights to Iceland

- Be flexible on dates,  choose "show the whole month" option in flight search websites (aviasales, opodo, skyscanner, checkfelix) to see more cheap options.

- Fly with rucksack only, so you dont need to pay extra for luggage and to waste time at the airport. It can be a challenge, but I will make a video of how to pack for Iceland in Winter with rucksack only or take one bag for 2 people if needed.

💙 Save on Accomodation in Iceland

- sometimes on MOBILE APP accomodation prices can be up to 10% cheaper
- choose place with a common kitchen. This was our big money saver! You can safe a lot if you cook at your accomodation. Read below about our accomodation Eric the Red Guesthouse.
- NO for "breakfast included" options they were way more expensive as those without breakfast.

💙 Save on Tours in Iceland

The best way to see much of Iceland in a short period of time is to book tour packages. Iceland is advanced on such day tours giving visitors  the amazin experience and variety of things to do and to see. How you can safe on it:

- go for tours on big buses, you will save money, but be ready to see less than with small buses as such tours deal with big groups and not very flexible.
- compare prices on different platforms like: Viator, www.booking.com/attractions, Musement, GetYourGuide, etc. We saved some money finding same tours on www.booking.com/attractions.
 - check prices on direct websites of Iclandic tour organizers, like bustravel.is, nicetravel.is (we booked tours with these 2 and they were pretty good).
- book in advance, we lost some cool 2-day packages because of thinking too long.
- if you skip Blue Lagoon, you will safe about  €100 :) Second exlensive is Sky Lagoon. Tours with "Secreet Lagoon" were much cheaper.
- get  10% discount using PROMO CODE TONY10 on bustravel.is (does not apply on tours with lagoons where 3rd parties involved). We got this code on our last tour, I wish we could get it earlier to save more!

- Nothern Lights Tours:
   1.  it is possible to see Aurora Borealis (less strong because of city lights) still for free in Reykjavik, without any bus tours (for example from here or next to Perlan Museum, on that hill)
   2. book tours on your first days, if you don't see it on the first tour, you are most likely to be invited on the 2nd tour for free.

💙 Save on Food Costs in Iceland

Food in Iceland is expensive.
- we brought some snacks like nuts and sweets from Austria
- went to cheap supermarket "BONUS" (google maps location) and bought food for the next 2,5 days. Cooked at our accomodation kitchen, had healthy breakfasts and dinners at home.
- ate from "free to use" box at our accomodation :)  Eric the Red Guesthouse.
- packed our "home made" sandwiches  and ordered only soups for lunch on tours.

💙Our flights, accomodation, tours and food expenses

Our flight
We flew with wizzair.com and paid 170eur for flights from Vienna to Iceland /each:
- with 40x30x20 rucksacks (€135 Eur/flight)
- including 1 additional carry-on bag, that we shared (€35/person)

Our accomodation
We have chosen Eric the Red Guesthouse and the stay was AMAZING! We paid €55,30 person / night for a nice room with common bathroom. Will write later a full review with pictures.

-very friendly guys on reception, gave us many tips, advised on shops and  activities.
- fully equipped Kitchen and dining area!
-free milk, free conrflakes, free stuff other guests leave like noodles and rice! We cooked our breakfasst and dinners there and it definitely helped us to safe.
- great location, next to most famous church
Hallgrímskirkja

Our tours
We booked the following tours:
- Golden Circle with Crater Lake and Sky Lagoon Premium in the evening (day trip, small bus), €199 (unfortunately last minute, we didnt need any "Premium", dont be us, book ahead!)
- Nothern lights night tour, incl free entrance to Aurora Museum/ €15 value, (to go separately!) €42, big bus
- South Coast and Black Sand beach - €73 (supposed to be big bus, but we got upgrated to small bus for free.

Our food
- lunches on tours: 2 days, 2 soups, abt €17,5eur each = €35
- Supermarket: food for 2,5 days (breakfasts, dinners, sandwiches to go) = €25/person
- ice cream, everywhere, was  difficult not to buy :) = €7

Others Expenses
Museum Perlan visit: €33 (Museum itself, cool Ice Cave in it, 360° view roof top terrace with restaurant)

Spent total in 3 days, 1 person:
€170 - flight
€166 - accomodation
€67 - food
€314 - tours (could be cheaper)
€33 - museum
€50 - airport transfer both ways
------------------------
€800

What to pack for Iceland
What to do in Iceland in 3 days

After years of travelling with carry-on only, I could drastically reduce the weight of items I take. Especially for backpacking, where you have to wear it all on your shoulders, moving around a lot and the soil is not always good for the suitcase wheels.

CONTENTS

🌍General tipps before the trip
🌍What backpack to choose
🌍Shoes
🌍Cloths
🌍Liquids
🌍Items I was happy I packed
🌍DONT take it on your backpack trip:

🌍General tipps before the trip
- inform the bank you go abroad. Have all numbers in case you need to block your credit card.
- take enough cash (you can exchange by arrival), be sure you have some cash in different places/ pockets in case you loose your wallet
- install MAP.ME or similar offline map, because online maps might not work
- how often you think you will use this or that item? Pack items first that you will use often, the rest you can reduce.
- if its "just in case" item, can you buy it on arrival in case you will need it?
- check every piece you plan to take and ask: is there any light weight or smaller version of itp?
- check weather shortly before your trip

🌍What backpack to choose
Don't take the biggest you can find. It will add you extra weight and size might not be suitable for taking on a plane. Max 45L. Look for light weight. I had some  heavy one on my trip to Thailand and was not happy with it. This backpack for 30L  looks nice.

Here is my trolley-hybrid, I use it, when the trip is not backpacking but sometimes I have to be fast, so I wear it as a rucksack.

 - for good organisation use packing cubes. Mine are here. I could quickly find anything in my bag thanks to them. This pic is the original one from my Thailand trip. I had packed tops / bottoms / bikinis/shoes separately.

🌍Shoes
  • light weight and easy to press (to save weight) sport shoes.  If I travel from a cold winter destination to tropical countries, I just put additionally warm socks while heading to the airport. So no need to take any extra winter boots.
  • Light weight water shoes (you can buy in Thailand by arrival if needed)
  • flip flops
  • sandals,
  • or, I had these crocs, that  were great for city walks and for the beach
🌍Cloths

- General rule: pack for 1 week, even if you stay longer. You can wash and repeat.
- Take more bottoms than tops. Same pants/shorts you can wear multiple times with different tops.
- Dont take bulky heavy pieces: pack layers.
- Can you wear/ use it multiple times? For example: if you take extra comfy outfit for a flight, maybe you can pack such pieces, that you can wear also on hikes and city walks?
- pack basic colors (black, white, etc) they are  easier to combine
- pack some old cloths: after some hard core hikes you will be  dirty and sweaty anyway, you can throw  away used tshirt and: win more space + reduce weight in your backpack.

In Thailand you can buy many cheap tops! Make sure you will have space for it (one more reason to pack some old cloths and throw it away after usage). For me sleeveless tops worked better than t-shirts (too hot and sweaty in tshirts). I packed 6 sleeveless tops and bought additional 2! I was  using literally max 4-5. So dont overpack like me :)
Do you see that blue packing cube on the picture? I could fit all the pieces into it.

I was  so happy I took my light weight  "yoga pants", I was literally wearing  them everywhere: sometimes you need to cover your legs, entering Temples or some sightseeing places and there pants were just  always right  to wear.

White shirt! Breathable, light weight, not too tight. I could wear it on hikes and when visiting Temples  in Cambodia. You have to cover  your  shoulders and in black tshirt is too hot.

Sarong /Skirt /towel I was  using it at the beach, as a skirt at temples, sometimes as  a scarf to cover shoulders.

or for more professional hikes to pack  light weight zipp off hiking pants, that you can also wear  as  shorts.

🌍Liquids

- as we are limited with 1L bag

🌍Items I was happy I packed

packable bag from Decathlon
kanat
veshalki
light weight  rain jacket
balaklawa
shoe protection
daypack for city tours, shopping, or packable bag

🌍DONT take it on your backpack trip:
jeans
high heels

This is NOT about getting citizenship because of  marriage or asylum. Official name is: "on the basis of a legal entitlement" I got my citizenship in 2017, after 6 years residence in Austria. In Vienna.

CONTENTS

📑General Requirements
📑Minimum Stay in Austria
📑German Language level
📑Work requirements
📑Calculation of "Lebensunterhalt"
📑Better to apply married or single?
📑what documents required
📑how to write CV for citizenship application
📑TEST for citizenship
📑How long it takes

First  step is to check general requirements: they are listed in English here: General conditions for naturalisation (oesterreich.gv.at)

📑minimum stay in Austria

Good news  for those who will apply for citizenship on the basis of a legal entitlement. Minimum 6 years! Yes! You read it correctly. Its written on the official website here: Granting of citizenship on the basis of a legal entitlement (oesterreich.gv.at) Extra screenshot for non-believers:

For students  its 6 years too, stop counting 2 for 1, its  when applying for different types of visas, not for citizenship.

📑 German Language level
B2 or
B1 is also acceptable if:
  • min 3 years of voluntary work with a non-profit organisation, or
  • min 3 years work in the educational, social or healthcare sector (like nurse), or
  • min 3 years of work in representing the interests of others (e.g. works council, parents’ representative)

📑 work requirements
you DON'T have to work all 6 years! You have to present your "best" 36 months within 6 years.
and the last 6 months will be checked additionally too. For example, if you studied 3 years, worked 2,5 years and lost your job few months before application, you still can apply. Magistrat will calculate the average salary and expences for the last 6 months. You even dont have to work full time. The most important your expences are covered and some money remains for normal living. I will show in calculations below.

📑"gesicherter Lebensunterhalt" calculations
This is the most important point. Many people ask "Whats the minimum salary to apply for  citizenship?" There is no minimum salary. You can rent a room for 400€ gross, or you can rent a big  apartment for 2000€. Magistrat calculates your income minus your expenses.

FORMULA

Your income (salary, kids money, rent income, etc)
- your expenses (rent, bank loans, internet, insurances, electricity, etc)
+ extra state deduction 327,91€
-----------------------------------------
1.110,26€ for 1 person (from 1.2023)

Examples:

If you rent a room for 400€, your salary should be: 1110,26 (required minimum) + 400 (rent) - 327,91 (state deduction) = 1182,35€ net /month. If you rent an apartment for 2000€, you need: 1110,26 (required minimum) + 2000 (rent) - 327,91 (state deduction) = 2782,35€ net /month

Of course I didnt consider other expenses like internet, heating, phone, insurances, etc. This is  just basic calculation fo find out if you have enough money to apply or not. Use my  calculations as a basis (02.2023), updated numbers you will find here: General conditions for the issue of residence permits (oesterreich.gv.at) Also minimum for couples, kids is mentioned etc.

📑 better married or single?
if you are married, you have to bring all your  documents AND of your partner. Its also double work for Magistrat. If your documents are ok, but something is missing by your partner, you will not get any confirmation until both sets are full and correct. You need records for you and your  partner for the last 6 years!

📑 what documents required

they are always individual for each applicant. In general: salary proof of  "best" last 36 months, incl last 6months, no criminal records, birth certificate, insurance, marriage/divorce certificate, KSV1780 (credit loans, debts), rent contracts or bank transaction proofs for the last 6 years, Meldezetteln also for the last 6 years, etc. Proof of living in Austria for 6 years.

📑 how to write CV for citizenship application

Dont bring your best edited CV as for looking for a job! No. They need details for each month of your 6 years in Austria. If you studied (even if not finished) so write: studied there from--- till---- (add a proof, like semester notes); worked at a company XX from----till---(add a proof, like salary slips). If you didnt work and  didnt study you should add this info too. If longer than 6 months Magistrat will ask you for the proof: it can be doctor visits in this period.

📑 TEST for citizenship

- not difficult, sometimes funny. And its a multiple choice, so no need to write anything, just mark a correct answer. Your will get all learning materials. They are not big. I took me 2 weeks to get ready and I passed with 95% correct answers. My german level was B2. I highly recommend to practice with these online tests:

- Staatsbürgerschaftstest Wien - Einbürgerung.at (einbuergerung.at) OR Mein Österreich, Vorbereitung zur Staatsbürgerschaft - Online Übungstest durchführen (staatsbuergerschaft.gv.at). At my final test I had about  60% questions similar to those form online tests.

📑 how long it takes

If you are single (only1 set of docs) & fast with collecting documents and if you ask to pass the test faster, you can get the positive confirmation already within 3-4 months. In Vienna. Maybe outside Vienna its even faster. After getting positive confirmation you will/might need to leave your current  citizenship. After that it can take additional 2-3 months till they recheck your status (if you didnt  convict any crime within this period, etc).

Please feel free to ask questions to this topic, so I can add more useful info, or help me to update the data if you think smth is missing here: yanapacks (at) gmail.com or in a comment section.

If you would like to thank for the useful information please book hotel on booking.com through my links or shop on Amazon through my links. No extra cost for you, but I might get a small commission.

Meilen sammeln in Österreich, meilen sammeln ohne Kreditkarte

While looking for earning more miles (Miles and More program) in Austria, without opening a credit card, I found a very interesting option, totally free, no need to buy or spend anything!

You can get up to 1000, sometimes even 2000 miles / MONTH just by writing reviews about hotels you stayed in on HolidayCheck!

All the details + registration form you will find HERE (redirecting to Holidaycheck cooperation with Miles and More)

How it works

For each review HolidayCheck gives you 100 miles (for certain destinations at a certain time you can get even 200 miles for the review). Each month you can write max 10 reviews. The review should be in German.

You can write about hotels you visited up to 2 years ago. By registration dont forget to add your Miles-and-More card number.

I used it already few times too and will continue. Below is my screenshot.

If you wish more posts how I get miles addtionally without credit cards, just let me know.
